Electrolytes– do we really need them?
I am a fanatic about drinking my electrolyte water before and after my workouts- maybe its because I live in Vegas, or that I do hot yoga/Pilates, or maybe its because I think it tastes better, but I think it really does help with recovery.
For todays Tuesday Tips I thought I would dig a little deeper and find out why that is.
- Electrolytes play a vital role in maintaining homeostasis within the body- we need them!
- Electrolytes are substances already found in your body such as chlorine, potassium, phosphate, magnesium, calcium and sodium
- Drinking electrolyte water after a workout replaces minerals and fluids lost when you sweat- they are important for blood chemistry and muscle action!
So if you have a grueling workout or it’s a really hot day you can probably use some electrolyte replacement.
Goods news: if you don’t want to buy expensive electrolyte water you can make your own!
Find the recipe here:
Electrolytes can also found in certain foods like bananas, salt, pumpkin seeds & coconut water (the real stuff not the processed kind). So if you have a well balanced diet you should be good to go and only need to replace when you do a lot of sweating…. Speaking of sweating lets get to the gym!
Happy Tuesday everyone!
